Day two of aerification is well under way and despite the sore backs, tired legs, and aching arms, the Turf Crew is pushing on in their efforts to finish this very difficult, yet vital task. It was a full 16 hour day yesterday, with the possibility of another today, but they have done a stand-up job!
Over the years, we have talked a lot about the reasons why we aerify. There certainly are many to be had from this task. In a wet spring like we just experienced, it is vital to open up the soil and allow some air and gas exchange to take place for the benefit of the plant. For a simple, and more entertaining explanation of the aerification process, check out this informative video on some of the benefits resulting from this process....
We did make the decision to use a mini tine this spring, which will most certainly aid in our ability to heal quicker. In fact, rolling the ball on a green which has been aerified by a mini tine, does not result in much of a difference. It's not to say there is no disruption, but it is certainly less severe.
Other than aerifying, the crew is still making progress in areas such as garden beautification, trying to stay on top of the ever-growing rough, and our new irrigation issues which pop up daily now that we are into the irritation season!
Of course, we have a full plate of action items to take care of including fertilizing our hungry turf areas, which at the moment include our greens, tees, fairways and roughs. We have a handful of irrigation projects to tend to, and of course, the current weeds we will begin battling including milkweed and clover. There certainly is never a dull moment!
That is all for now, but stay tuned for some more updates on what is happening at your club. I would go on longer but I know there are a couple of tired fellows wondering when I will return with a shovel in my hands......
