2011 is in the Books

It's official; the 2011 golf season is done at Sawmill Creek.  And following suit of the last few years, the moment we close the course, the weather makes a turn for the better, and we all wish we could be out there for just one last round....I know I'd like to as well!

I apologize for the lack of updates and photos over the past couple of weeks.  My photography skills and tweets have been put on hold, while the fine folks at RIM sort out some technical issues with the Super Phone.......I suspect the Super Ant may have had something to do with the technical issues I have had over the past two weeks.....

Anyway, the course is now officially closed, and we have been busy working away at getting all of our loose ends tied up up prior to the first snow which is sure to come soon.  On Monday, we retrieved all of the course materials such as ball washers, benches, tee blocks, divot caddies, as well as most of the stakes and ropes from the golf course.  Some of these items we store away for the winter, and others we bring in and begin preparations for cleaning and painting so they look fantastic for the 2012 season.

The biggest, and most important task we perform once the course is closed, is the application of our winter snow mould protection.  The weather was absolutely fantastic today, and we were able to get everything put down in record fashion; not a single problem!  I think this is the first time in my 15 years of golf management, where I did not freeze during either the irrigation blow-out, or with the snow mold applications.  Usually we freeze during both, but you won't hear a single complaint from this guy about the weather we've had this month!

In preparation of winter, we also must get around to all of our satellite control boxes on the course, and remove all controllers, as well as power packs so we can hopefully avoid damage from all those little critters we evicted from the fescue back in September!  These boxes prove to be popular hang-outs for mice and other rodents once the weather turns cold.....

I'd like to take this moment to thank everybody who follows this blog, and all of the members of Sawmill Creek for making 2011 another memorable golf season.  Like every golf season, the weather certainly powered many a conversation around the club, and 2011 will certainly go down as a wet season at The Saw.  Yet again, 2011 saw the Turf Department maintain our beautiful course with less than ever before, and for that I thank each and every one of my teammates for their hard-work and dedication over the course of the season.  I would also like to thank the rest of the management team here at the Saw for at the very least making everyday interesting!  I don't think a day has ever passed here at Sawmill where I didn't have at least one 'belly-laugh" throughout the day!

I would also like thank everybody especially for following this blog, and putting up with crazy rants about Super Ants, and other ramblings which make you scratch your head.  I never would have thought that just over 10 months into this blog, I would have had 6000 page views, but here we are.....thank you.

Over the winter, drop by periodically as I attempt to explain some of the in's and out's as to why we do what we do here at Sawmill Creek.  And hey, what's wrong with keeping golf fresh in our minds?  Perhaps it will make the winter fly by quicker......

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at jamie.downton@sawmill-creek.com
